Plain Text

Not everything inside a template needs to be a Jade tag.

You can write ordinary text directly inside an element:

p This is a paragraph of plain text.

Piped text

The pipe character can be used when you need to mix text with other lines.

p
  | This is the first line.
  | This is the second line.

Literal HTML

Lines beginning with < can contain literal HTML.

<div class="legacy">
  <p>Literal HTML can be used when necessary.</p>
</div>

Text blocks

A dot after a tag creates a plain-text block.

script.
  const message = "Hello";
  console.log(message);

This is particularly useful for embedded JavaScript and CSS.

Whitespace

Whitespace deserves special attention in Jade. Indentation determines template structure, while whitespace inside text is handled separately.

When exact spacing matters, use explicit text lines or inline interpolation rather than relying on indentation alone.
